Grade 1 - Kitah Aleph Update

Kitah Aleph students learned another new Hebrew letter today. We learned the letter chaf. The children brought home a sheet with all the letters we have now learned. Parents, please ask your children to read the Hebrew to you. The students are becoming fabulous Hebrew readers!

The children practiced the Chanukah candle blessings with Cantor Ken and again in class. We reviewed the story of Chanukah and talked about the two miracles: the oil that should have lasted only one night but lasted for eight days and the fact that a small band of untrained Jewish fighters could defeat the mighty Assyrian army. The children watched a short video retelling the Chanukah story and also a video showing how Chanukah is celebrated in Jerusalem.

Here are the links to the video:

Kitah aleph students are increasing their Hebrew vocabulary. We played color bingo today and also Simon Says in Hebrew. We had a visit from our shinshin, Bar, who taught us about the Negev desert in the south of Israel. Over the next number of Sundays, the children will be making a booklet on various parts of Israel with Bar. Today they learned that the Negev contains hills, the Red Sea, camels and is of course, very hot.

Our wonderful madricha was not at school today. She is recovering from surgery at home. This seemed like a great opportunity to learn more about the Jewish mitzvah of bikkur cholim, visiting the sick. The children watched a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLDCu6xG3qw) and made get well cards for our madricha.

At the end of the morning, we joined the rest of the school for an assembly. All of the Temple Israel community is encouraged to participate in the Purim shpiel planned for the holiday of Purim at the end of February. Children and families can prepare an act on their own or in small groups or can participate in larger Purim skits with other congregants. It sounds like it will be a wonderful event.

Have a terrific week! Shavua Tov, Joanne
