Grade 2 Update

I continue to be amazed at the great progress the second graders are making in Hebrew reading! We recently had a guest from the Gateways program in Newton observing our Hebrew class and at the end of the session she remarked on the confidence and comfort of the students with the reading material.

Our newest letter is  ק"koof" , see if you can find the hidden key in the letter.  We have also added a vowel that makes the "oo" sound as in the words"boo".  At this point in the text the majority of what we are reading are actual words rather than nonsense words, it is a great way for the students to get a feel for the language. We have also learned the prefixes for "the" and "in the" and have begun to construct short sentence aloud.

Hannukah is around the corner and the students are VERY excited!  We have reviewed the story and discussed different miracles found in the story.  We agreed that while the oil lasting eight days was  miraculous the fact that the Jews were able to defeat the Greeks was probably was probably an even larger miracle.  We also discussed the courage that it must have taken to stand up for ones beliefs when it might have been easier to assimilate into the Greek culture.

I am looking forward to hearing about everyone's Hannukah traditions and celebrations, as well as celebrating together in school.
