Grade 6 Update

    Dear Kitah Vav Families,

We had a very full Sunday of programs and learning yesterday. We learned about the         Jewish historical time-line, with BCE (Before the Common Era) and CE (Common Era) as     our preferred terminology for events before the year zero and after the year zero, on        the  secular, every day reckoning of time. Students were asked what important                   happenings    belong on the Jewish timeline. This is in preparation for our study of              Nevi'iim, the Book of Prophets.

T    Three representatives from Natick U.S.Y.(United Synagogue Youth) came to visit and         present the programs and activities they sponsor. They reached out to our 6th/ 7th         graders, encouraging them to join "Junior USY (Grades 6, 7, 8) activities, and described t   the wonderful  opportunities and activities that will be open to them in Senior USY.

After that we went down to the Social Hall where we met Eli Dershwitz, the Olympic          fencer who grew up at Temple Israel.  He presented slides of the Rio de Janeiro S               Summer Olympics and talked about his experiences growing up and dedicating himself t     to his academics and to his sport.  He talked about being grounded in Jewish values           and good sportsmanship, and at the end gave us all a short lesson in the moves of            "saber fencing."

This Tuesday, January. 10, Kitah Vav students will have a visit from Prozdor faculty for s   some learning about Israel.  Next month Wednesday's Kitah Vav class will learn from           Prozdor.

As the World Wide Wrap is on Sunday, February 5, we have been practicing the prayers f     for putting on Tefillin.  I would like to hear each student read these prayers with               fluency!

Please help your student come prepared to class by bringing the three ring binder with o    our prayers.  If you know that your student will be absent please alert me or Robin.            This is much appreciated.

      Best,

      Rav Elana
