Grade 5: Kitah Hey- Diana's Update

Dear Kitah Hey families,

We've had a great start to 2017 here at Temple Israel. Last Tuesday and Wednesday, the fifth graders rapped up learning the Torah service prayers leading up to the first aliyah. I was blown away by their beautiful singing. They are so excited to have learned all the words to these so that they can participate in the service in the future. After spending time on this, we celebrated by playing a fun game designed to help students with their Hebrew decoding skills. For this game, the class was divided into two teams. Each team was given a game board, dice, and a pile of cards

Each student had to move to the appropriate box after rolling the dice and use a marker to show where they landed. Afterward, the students had to pick either one or two cards (whatever the box told them). Each card included a word from the prayers we have been learning. The students had to read this word correctly in order to proceed in the game. Each card also asked the students to do something silly while reading (one example is pictured below).

The students had so much fun with this game that they were upset when it came time for dismissal. There is no better feeling in the world for a teacher!

Below, is a Hebrew homework calendar for the month of January.

Thank you for your support.

Best,
Diana
