March 11th in Kitah Aleph

Passover is coming! Kitah aleph students began practicing the four questions with Cantor Ken. We also learned great hand motions to go with them. Cantor Ken began teaching the children the tune and the words to the order of the seder. He included fun hand motions with that as well.

Back in class, the children heard the book The Ten Plagues of Egypt by Shoshana Ledon. This book recalls in humorous poetic verse the various plagues that God visited on Pharoah and the Egyptians. The children continues to work on making their centerpiece scenes of the crossing of the Red Sea. Be sure to come to the family dinner on March 23rd to see these centerpieces in their final form.

In Hebrew, the children learned two new Hebrew letters, nun and chet. Chet has the same sound as another letter we learned previously, the letter chaf. Chet looks a lot like the tav but without the "toe." It also resembles the letter hey but does not have the "hole." Ask your children to explain these mnemonic devices that can serve to help children remember how to recognize the Hebrew letters.

Kitah aleph students were happy to spend some time with Bar this week. He showed us pictures of some of the animals that live near his home on Mt. Carmel. These animals include: jackals, porcupines and wild boar.

Next week we will learn another new letter and a new vowel. We will finish the centerpieces, practice the four questions and learn more about Passover. I hope to see many of you at the synaplex next Shabbat.

Shavua Tov,
Joanne
