Grade 2/Kitah Bet: The Latest from Kitah Bet

Kitah Bet students had a wonderful and very full morning yesterday! We started our morning as usual with tefillah in the sanctuary with Cantor Ken. Then, we were fortunate to have even more time with the Cantor as he helped us learn the words for the v'ahavta section of the shema.  Cantor Ken also worked with the children to develop hand signs for the v'ahavta. Making signals for the words helps the students gain a deeper understanding of the shema. The signals also serve as ways to remember the meaning of the Hebrew words.

Kitah Bet students also enjoyed the opportunity to further practice their Hebrew in our session on Hebrew through movement. The children enjoyed listening to and following seven or eight movement commands in Hebrew. Their Hebrew skills are really expanding!

Toward the end of the morning, one group of children remained in the classroom with Hamorah Margie and practiced their Hebrew reading and writing. The other group worked with Hamorah Joanne. Then the groups switched places.

When working with Hamorah Joanne, the children reviewed the beginning of the torah stories about Abraham and Sarah. Last week the children learned about the mitzvah of hachnassat orchim, welcoming guests, and how Abraham and Sarah welcomed the three angels, giving them shade, food and water. The children shared what they do to welcome guests to their homes. We also discussed how the midrash teaches us about the mitzvah of bikkur cholim, visiting the sick. According to the rabbis, one of the angels, and some even say G-d, himself/herself visited Abraham who was not feeling well. Yesterday, the children learned about how Abraham acted as an "upstander," standing up to G-d to make sure that the righteous people of Sodom and Gomorrah were not punished along with the wicked. Kitah Bet students then had fun acting out some parts of the story.
